My wife, Allysia and I have 2 wonderful boys, Evan (3.5) and Bennett (1). Despite being blessed with these wonderful sons, we have still experienced pain and heartbreak through our process of having a family. Evan, after being born, spent some time in the NICU, and even though the issues he was facing weren't nearly as serious as the other families and babies, it was a very eye opening experience for us.
Not too long after we got Evan back home and settled in as a family, I was asked by a close friend if I would be interested in serving for a local non-profit called Healthier Moms & Babies. I have been serving on the board and several committees now since January of 2018. Later in 2018, Allysia was pregnant and we had just shared the great news with our family. The next day, we experienced a miscarriage, a heartbreak that we would never wish on anyone. This grieving period helped me realize why giving back to Healthier Moms & Babies was so important to us. If we could do anything to help others have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, we wanted to be a part of that.
Thankfully, we had our sweet Rainbow Baby, Bennett, in October of 2019. Our boys have been such a blessing to our lives and have beena a major reason of why we want to give back. In addition to the loss of our sweet baby, my sister and brother-in-law experienced a miscarriage at 20 weeks of her sweet baby girl, Addilynn. The loss of life and grief in our family has been something we never thought we would experience. Our hope is that, our loss will help others either through their loss or through learning what can be done to decrease infant mortality and improve birth outcomes for other families.
