I was a 12-year-old in love with my first girlfriend, living in a home that taught "Love the sinner, hate the sin." Soon I'd be sent to Christian counseling and an evangelical church where the pastor believed in stoning the gays. At 16, I was lucky enough to find a Houston support group for LGBTQIA+ teens that led me to safe housing for my junior year of high school.

My family would become whole again. But I met kids who were so broken by rejection that they'd end up dying by suicide, or turning to drugs, or life on the streets. I think back on my teenage years and marvel at my youthful resilience and the miraculous luck of finding a trusted space when I was at my most alone.

Austin Pride are two of the words I hold most dear to my heart. It can be a death sentence growing up hearing that you are bad or worthless or doomed to unhappiness. OutYouth is our Central Texas haven for LGBTQIA+ joy. A trusted space where vulnerable kids can be reminded that they are safe and loved and worthy of a bright future.

These are scary times where we're seeing a backslide of our rights. Every dollar we raise together is a vote of confidence not just for my younger self, but for all of us who grew up on the margins and still made a big, beautiful life for ourselves.
