On July 25, 2012 during his second tour in Afghanistan, King was severely injured by an Improvised Explosive Device which caused him major internal injuries, permanent damage to his right arm and hand and the amputation of both of his legs. He woke up at the hospital 8 days later with his wife and his mother at this bedside. The Yellow Ribbon Fund was honored to have assisted the Kings during Cedric’s recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
King completed the Boston Marathon, running on prosthetic blades just 21 months after losing his legs. He has gone on to compete in a number of physically challenging events, including a 70.3-mile half Ironman Triathlon, the 2014 New York City Marathon, and the 48.6-mile Disney Marathon series.
King shares his inspirational story of endurance with audiences across the country, including schools, churches, the National Football League, and Fortune 500 companies. Just as he led and motivated men in combat, he now leads and motivates others to see the possibilities in their own lives.
He is also the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal and is a four-time Best Ranger Competition competitor.

YRF provides essential programs that address the unique challenges these heroes and their families face following unexpected medical crises. Through our Crossroads Program, we offer no-cost accommodations and transportation while loved ones receive care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Our Keystone Program, with 11 chapters nationwide, supports families returning home with life skills training, peer support, mental health access, and more.
Yellow Ribbon Fund has proudly served over 45,000 service members and continues to assist more than 5,000 military families annually. With an 85% program ratio, 85 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to our mission of Keeping Military Families Together.
