I am a queer Jewish teenager from wedgewood who, like most americans, is aware of and wishes to do something about the opioid crisis that is afflicting our nation. Currently, I am working with G.I.F.T. to provide resources to organizations that are working to combat this crisis, as well as providing direct support to people who are suffering from substance abuse disorder. I decided to work with this group on this issue because last year, there were four reported opioid overdose deaths in the Seattle school district, and it is likely there was at least one additional unreported death. The response of Seattle Public Schools was to send an email home to parents, and I feel that this is indicative of the response of this city to a crisis that is claming even the lives of its children.
