I've been involved with OneAmerica, since its inception as Hate Free Zone: first, as an immigration lawyer working with the Washington New American Program to help immigrants become citizens; and next, as a OneAmerica board member, secretary and treasurer. The organization was first founded to help address the racism experienced by immigrants following 9/11. It evolved as an organization dedicated to build power in our immigrant communities through community organizing - to help immigants become citizens, gain education in the electoral process, and to help them run for office, as well as helping immigrant parents engage with their children's schools, and through programs to provide English and computer literacy.  More recently, OneAmerica has helped immigrants and Dreamers gain legal status, and in response to the COVID-19 crisis, to expand the benefits provided to all people.
