So many of the challenges we face in Westchester, NYS and the U.S. could be met if only we got started earlier.    I've worked with children and families for four decades.   In the beginning of my career, we didn't really know what made a difference for children, but we do now.   We just don't put enough money behind it. As a result, thousands of young children still don't get the right start, and we all lose as a result.  But it doesn't have to be that way.  

I've seen up close the difference quality early childhood programs can make, and the research bears this out. It is the best chance to set the stage for children's lifelong success.  Kids who get this quality early care benefit from better physical and emotional health, are less likely to engage in risky or dangerous behavior, and are more likely to graduate high school, be successful in college and the workforce, and contribute to our community in positive ways as an adult.

That’s why for our 2016 Giving Tuesday campaign we are introducing our Brain-Building Project, which will deliver kits full of “brain-building” materials, carefully selected by our specialists to bolster young children’s curiosity and learning, to child care businesses throughout the county – particularly those serving low-income families. We remain committed to fostering brain growth in children up to age 5, as research shows this is the best way to prepare them for success in school and life.

Each kit costs approximately $300 and will include books, manipulatives and blocks, and science, art and dramatic play materials.  The “brain-building kits” will be distributed to participating programs following training and intensive technical assistance from Council specialists.

Our goal this year is to raise $18,000 on Giving Tuesday – November 29, 2016 – which would allow us to distribute 60 kits to child care businesses. One kit alone has the potential to help up to 18 children – imagine what 60 kits would accomplish!
