In April of 2017, at 24 weeks pregnant, I walked into what I thought would be a routine ultrasound for my twin boys. Following that ultrasound I was ushered into a cardiologist’s private office to learn that baby A was diagnosed with four congenital heart defects known as Tetralogy of Fallot. I can vividly remember every second of those moments. My world stopped and I had no idea what the coming months or years would look like for my family. The journey with our Mighty Mark has not always been easy, but upon entering the world of heart families I quickly learned how very fortunate we are. Mark’s defects could be repaired. Surgeries and treatments had been pioneered in the decades leading up to his birth that have resulted in relatively “normal” expected outcomes for his quality and longevity of life. Mark was in the NICU for about a month after his birth during which time underwent two procedures in the cardiac cath lab. At just shy of 4 months old he underwent his major open heart repair surgery. He was inpatient for 21 days total at that time. Mark will require at least one more open heart surgery, and he will need monitoring by cardiology for his entire life. We are one of the lucky heart families. We get to enjoy Mark & his life this side of heaven. We get to watch him start school with his siblings, and jump in my van most every day and declare "Mommy! I had a good day!". We get to ride scooters with him after school, we get to fight over who's turn it is with an iPad, we get to lay in bed and listen to sleepy songs together as he slowly stops talking for the first time since he opened his eyes that morning. Why? Because of advances in medical treatments for congenital heart defects, which requires research, which requires funding.
