This #GivingTuesday, I’m joining a global generosity movement and supporting Read Ahead, a New York City nonprofit dedicated to helping kids develop literacy and social-emotional skills they need to thrive.

In NYC public schools around 50% of students are struggling with one of the most foundational skills for success: reading. 

Read Ahead provides weekly sessions designed to help 1st - 5th graders develop literacy skills, a love of reading, confidence, and more. 

As a former mentor who read to an amazing 7-year-old Raquel from the Bronx, I experienced firsthand the benefits of this program. Raquel went from skipping over words she couldn't pronounce and delaying our reading by showing me her stuffed animals to eagerly selecting our next book (mystery was her favorite genre) and sounding out any difficult words. I was impressed.
