On October 21, Hope Lutheran Church will be abuzz with volunteers to pack lunches for school children in the mountain town of Bois Negresse, Haiti. Together, we'll assemble vitamin fortified lunches of rice, beans, and dehydrated vegetables.
It is great to work together to a common goal that is helping children who really need it! We are providing meals for kids who don't have 3 meals a day - probably not even one nutritious meal. And it is fun work!
Packathon goals:
- $25,000 will Provide Lunches for 178 students through 2024, including the summer months! Because there is a bit of a backlog, we will pack "only" 50,000 meals this year.
- $5,000 will Provide Textbooks for all students in Bois Negresse.
Let me tell you a few things about Haiti:
- Only 60% of adults can read at a 6th grade level.
- Their government is in disarray due to gang violence in the capitol, but in Future Forward for Haiti' partner communities in the mountains, school continues each day.
- The average income is $350 per year.
- Some children cannot count of even one meal a day.
