What is Hunger?

Tikvat Israel Congregation

Since 1983, Manna has been fighting hunger, feeding hope, and helping individuals and families move from scarcity toward stability. For the past 23 years, you and your congregation have been an important part of that work.

This High Holy Day season, from Rosh Hashanah through Sukkot, we are proud to continue our long-standing tradition of supporting Manna Food Center by collecting food and raising critical financial resources for our neighbors.

Last year, 17 congregations participated in Harvest Against Hunger, contributing 55,118.51 pounds of food and more than $76,000 to support our neighbors.

This year, that support is more important than ever. As the costs of food, housing, healthcare, utilities, and transportation continue to rise, more families are finding it difficult to make ends meet. The people turning to Manna are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and parents in our children’s schools. They are families trying to stretch groceries until the next paycheck, households working to fill the gap when SNAP benefits are not enough, and parents facing the added expense of keeping their children nourished and ready to learn as they return to school.

Manna has increased its support from approximately 6,400 households each month to more than 10,000 households each month, while also expanding our presence to more than 100 Montgomery County Public Schools.

Through partnerships with local farmers, wholesalers, and distributors, Manna is able to stretch every donation further and provide nutritious food where it is needed most. But we cannot do this work alone.

What a Donation Buys:
$500 helps stock weekend bags of shelf-stable foods that supplement a family’s meals and are distributed weekly at dozens of MCPS elementary schools.

$1500 creates a pop-up pantry of fresh produce, serving 100 families with nutritious healthy foods at no cost to one of our neighborhoods.

During this season of reflection and community, we invite you to join us in the spirit of Tikkun Olam by participating in this year’s Harvest Against Hunger. Every food donation and every financial contribution helps Manna continue meeting our neighbors with dignity, nourishment, and hope.

Reminder for donors: please put the name of your congregation on any offline donations of food or funds so we can make sure all gifts are recorded!
