Team Read Ahead for the 2026 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon

Hi Everyone! I've been volunteering with Read Ahead for 5 years now and it has truly been a meaningful and impactful experience. To give some color, I spend an hour every other week reading and working on phonics with a dedicated mentee from an NYC public school who is behind their grade reading level. I worked with my first mentee, Daryna, from second through fifth grade (she was taller than me by fourth grade!) and was able to see the real impact Read Ahead had on her reading skills, comprehension, and confidence. I'm currently working with Junior, a very energetic first grader, and have already seen his reading improve since the beginning of the school year! I'm very excited to be running my second ever half marathon in support of this fantastic organization - thank you for your support!!

In NYC public schools, around 50% of students are struggling with one of the most foundational skills for success: reading.

This is where Read Ahead comes in. We know that with the right support, every student can become a joyful, confident, and fluent reader. Read Ahead intervenes early, providing weekly sessions designed to help 1st - 5th graders develop literacy skills, a love of reading, confidence, and more. And we know Read Ahead works. Last year, 95% of parents and teachers said that their student(s) benefited from being in Read Ahead.
