Nicholas's Missionary Fundraising 2024-2025
My Specific Role
The Reality
There is an increasing mental health crisis sweeping youth and young adults across the country... Attending church and having a relationship with God is the last thing on many teens' minds.
Our Solution
Suffering is an inevitable part of life, we cannot prevent people from suffering entirely, but what we can do is show people they aren't alone and teach them to suffer well. Hard as Nails seeks to awaken youth to the power of God's love through evangelization, service to youth, sensitivity to sin and suffering, and building community.
The How
My role in this will be leading our Catholic Sports Outreach at a high school in Columbus OH.
I will be stationed in Bishop Hartley high school for the year with 2-4 other missionaries.
This past year we established a team of 4-6 student-athletes, also known as core team leaders, who I will work to disciple and empower in their faith. Along with these student leaders, we will work to serve the various sports teams on campus and make a world where no one suffers alone. We will do this in 3 ways, Huddles, Team messages, and retreats.
Huddles - Bible studies that are designed specifically to be relevant to the life of a student-athlete
Team messages - 10-15 minute motivational lessons and messages for specific sports teams at practices or games.
Retreats - Overnight and day retreats that seek to empower the student-athletes to lead there team to Christ.
The Result
The fruit of these retreats and this ministry is undeniable. One time at a retreat I sat next to a kid named Aidan. Initially, he didn't want to even look at me he mostly ignored me as I tried to talk to him. I prayed, "Holy Spirit, please help me make a breakthrough with this kid." While I sat next to him, the person leading the event asked me to share my testimony with the assembly. I shared a story about a close friend of mine who passed away in a car accident and how hard that was on me. After, I went back and sat down next to the kid and I noticed he was crying. He began to share with me about how his brother had died in a car accident and his mom was struggling with a chronic addiction and he was the only one taking care of himself and his little brother. When he finished sharing, I got the chance to pray with him and give him a bible. By the end of the event, his expression was visibly changed to a smile and he looked much lighter and less burdened. It was so powerful seeing how my own story could have such a big impact on someone's life and be an opportunity for healing.

Going into high school, my relationship with God was very superficial and not personal at all. I went to mass because my family went, but mostly because I sure as heck didn't want to go to hell. After I lost a close friend of mine in a car accident, I began to really contemplate the meaning of life and questioned the faith a lot and why God would let this happen. By the grace of God, I encountered the power of God's love on a retreat going into my senior year, and my life was forever changed. I suddenly became so grateful for my life and I decided I had to share the power of God's love with others by being a missionary!
