My Story

On Monday August 17th, 2020 I was induced to have my son Logan at 36 weeks due to Preeclampsia with severe features. It was the day after our baby shower and I woke up feeling really off. That day I was monitoring my blood pressure at home because late in my second trimester I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension. My blood pressure was reading over 140/90 range so I decided to keep an eye on it and try to relax to see if it would eventually go down. Around 6-6:30pm I went to go use the restroom when all of a sudden my vision went completely white and I couldn't see anything. I was stuck in my bathroom for a while as I couldn't see to get around when my vision started to return slowly but never returned fully. It was like looking through really thick fog while seeing floating sparkles. I knew something was going terribly wrong so my boyfriend/father of our child assisted in taking my blood pressure. It had gone well above 170/110 (which outside of pregnancy I usually have low blood pressure). He immediately rushed me to the hospital and upon our arrival I collapsed in the parking lot as I wasn't able to walk into the emergency room. After being wheeled in the hospital the staff knew I was preeclamptic and had me transfered to their women's hospital for treatment. After 3 doses of blood pressure medicine they were able to slightly drop but stabilize my blood pressure from rising any higher and put me on the magnesium sulfate drip to prevent me from having seizures (which anyone who's ever had it knows the hot and burning feeling it gives you all over your body. They had 3 box fans in the delivery room and ice packs all over my body). I had cerebral edema which was what caused me to temporarily lose my vision and my liver/kidney functions were through the roof. During all the treatment I also received a double dose of steroid injections to help my son's lungs mature. After a long almost failed induction our handsome son Logan Evans was born that Wednesday August 19th, 2020! Nicu was there at the time of his birth but to all shock he needed no breathing assistance and was an ultimate blessing. They did say when he was born he was smaller than they were expecting and diagnosed him with a mild case IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction). For my safety after he was born I was transfered to the hospital's high risk unit and continued on the magnesium drip for a further 2 more days. During that period I wasn't allowed to hold or see my son without the support of my boyfriend or nurse due to all the medicine I was on. After stable blood pressure readings and no more signs of swelling we were cleared to get transfered over to the post-partum unit where we would stay a couple more days until we were discharged from the hospital. I realize that through that traumatic experience we were very lucky and blessed to have the outcome that we had with our handsome baby boy. The reason why I am choosing to participate in the Indianapolis Promise Walk is to help raise awareness so that other expectant mom's can know the signs and symptoms of Preeclampsia. It is so important we know these signs so if a mom does develop Preeclampsia or even Hellp syndrome it can be caught early enough for the proper treatment. My son and I were very lucky and my heart goes out to those who have experienced loss due to this horrible complication.
