Help me keep someone fed, safe, and warm this winter.

No one should go to bed COLD and HUNGRY!

India Goes Under Water

Torrential rains have pushed thousands of people in Hyderabad, India out of their homes due to severe flooding. More than 20,000 households have been affected, placing them in a state of emergency. Every major highway in and out of the district is now closed along with mass telecommunications outages. Islamic Relief is mobilizing assessments and emergency aid in order to support survivors.

One of the Largest Populations in the World; One of the Most in Need

India’s vast population size and rapid growth mean that while the percent of Indians living in poverty has fallen, the absolute number of individuals living in poverty in India’s poorest states has actually increased.

That coupled with the region being prone to natural disasters like monsoons and floods means that hundreds of thousands of people face displacement, injury, or worse.

Did you know…

  • One-third of India’s population survives on less than $1.25 a day, accounting for approximately 1/3 of the world’s poor
  • Almost half of all children in India are moderately or severely stunted in growth
  • 1 in every 3 of the world’s malnourished children live in India (UNICEF)
  • Malnutrition is a common occurrence
  • Educational opportunities for women and girls are disproportionate to those of men and boys

With all this considered, one thing remains clear: The people of India are resilient and, with the support of donors like you, families in need there can access opportunities to break the chains of poverty and move toward success.

Islamic Relief’s Dedication to India

Islamic Relief has been working in India since 1994, often collaborating with local relief organizations to ensure that assistance is delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible. Islamic Relief India opened in 2008 to implement development programs to help alleviate growing needs for humanitarian aid.

Here’s just a sampling of recent efforts for families in need across India:

  • Delivering emergency relief to survivors of natural disasters
  • Providing vital food aid, including Qurbani meat and Ramadan food boxes
  • Opening access to educational opportunities for vulnerable communities
