Long After Apartheid, Inequality Lingers

Long after the end of apartheid, South Africa remains a country with deep inequalities. More than half of the country lives below the national poverty line, and one in four people suffers hunger on a regular basis. Poverty is heavily centered in black communities.

With all this considered, one thing remains clear: The people of South Africa are resilient and, with the support of donors like you, families in need there can access opportunities to break the chains of poverty and move toward success.

Islamic Relief’s Dedication to South Africa

Islamic Relief opened an office in South Africa in 2003, and has overseen education and health programs geared towards alleviating poverty in the region, providing education support to children, and helping children affected by HIV and AIDS.

Here’s just a sampling of recent efforts for families in need across South Africa

  • Supporting the construction of an oncology ward for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital
  • Equipping high school students with proper classroom desks
  • Improving access to education for more than 400 children across three townships
