Tropical Storm Nalgae (Paeng) Strikes the Philippines

Tropical Storm Nalgae, or Paeng, made landfall over the weekend with sustained winds of 60 mph. Nalgae is the 16th tropical cyclone to have affected the country this season, with more than six times the daily average of rainfall for the month of October.

Nearly 100 people have lost their lives, while even more have been injured or deemed missing persons. Damage to infrastructure and agriculture have, combined, estimated to over $20 million dollars in losses. And with the extensive damage to roads and bridges, emergency response efforts have been made difficult.

Nevertheless, Islamic Relief is on the ground providing immediate relief to families in need. Similar to our last emergency effort for Tropical Storm Megi (Agaton), we are working with our local partner network to provide food aid as well as access to clean water and sanitation. With your support, we can help our brothers and sisters in the Philippines.

Focus on the Philippines

The Philippines has been ranked as one of the nations most vulnerable to climate disasters due to its geography. In turn, this has led to greater intensity and power in tropical storms. Our latest ongoing emergency response is for Tropical Storm Nalgae (Paeng), which has left trails of devastation across the country.

In addition, one-quarter of the population lives below the poverty line. But one thing remains clear. The people of the Philippines are resilient, and with the support of donors like you, families in need can break the chains of poverty and move towards building sustainable livelihoods.

We Need YOUR Help

As much as we’ve been able to accomplish together, there is still so much more to do. By supporting our efforts in the Philippines, you can help make a difference in the lives of those in desperate need.

Islamic Relief’s Dedication to the Philippines

Islamic Relief’s first response in the Philippines was to Typhoon Haiyan, or Yolanda, in 2013. We were able to provide emergency aid through integrated interventions including temporary shelter, rehabilitation of damaged houses and community facilities, and sustainable livelihood efforts.

In addition to providing vital humanitarian assistance to survivors of natural disasters, our efforts include:

  • Food aid to those suffering from starvation
  • Promoting disaster risk reduction and management as well as livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities
  • Women economic empowerment
