Walking for Mikey ❤️
I met Mikey in 2013. Before meeting him, I had never really known a child with autism, and I honestly had no idea what to expect.
What I quickly learned was just how easy it was to love him.
Within the first few months of being around Mikey, we formed a bond that I never could have anticipated. I thought I knew what it meant to be an adult before I met him, but Mikey taught me so much more about patience, responsibility, unconditional love, and what it truly means to show up for someone.
One of my favorite memories will always be the first time Mikey tried to say my name. Mikey is nonverbal, and it was the first time he had ever attempted to verbally say someone's name. Somehow, I was lucky enough that the name he tried to say was mine.
That's a moment I will carry with me forever.
And then there is his laugh. Mikey's laugh is completely authentic and comes straight from his heart. You have to earn it—but somehow, earning it has always been easy because Mikey is such a loving soul. There is nothing quite like knowing you were the reason for that laugh.
Our bond has only grown stronger over the years. Being Mikey's stepdad and having him in my life is one of my greatest joys. I am incredibly grateful for the relationship we have built and for the love we share.
