In March 2026, I’ll be joining 15 others from Kidney Donor Athletes climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro,  summiting on World Kidney Day! I'm climbing to raise awareness that you can continue to live your normal and very active life following kidney donation. 

Why did I donate?

Because I had a spare kidney I didn't need but someone else did. 

Why haven't I talked about it much?

I didn't want the attention that typically comes when donating a kidney to a complete stranger. My kidney was removed at 10 am at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and that afternoon given to a recipient at Mass Gen in Boston. Remaining anonymous was the right decision for me but I now realize that staying relatively quiet about kidney donation was a miss, a disservice to the 100,000 people on the kidney transplant wait list.

The wait is long for a kidney if it ever comes. Many patients endure long, painful, and expensive dialysis treatments several times a week while they wait. 13 people on average die every day while waiting, including children. I can't imagine trying to explain to a child that millions of people around them can help them, but don't know that they can. 

I'm climbing to raise awareness that donating your kidney is safe, rewarding, powerful, and the ultimate in badassery.
