On December 30, 2017 our son Flitch was born still at 31 weeks. We would later find out his death was likely caused by a recent CMV infection I contracted without ever knowing it. CMV is contracted by half the population by the time they reach the age of 40, but generally affects pregnant women and babies the most. Although you've probably never heard of it, CMV is the infection that the most babies are born with in America. It's extremely under researched and experts are just scratching the surface of how extreme the effects of CMV can be on an unborn baby. Prior to Flitch's death I had a perfect pregnancy with no risk factors for stillbirth whatsoever.

We've all heard the statistics on SIDS and how to prevent it. What you may not know is that stillbirth accounts for 10 times as many deaths as SIDS every year, yet we rarely discuss stillbirth. Here are some facts you may not know!

• Approximately 71 babies are born still every day - that amounts to 24,000 babies each year, or 1 out of every 160 babies born
• The United States ranks 48th out of 49 developed nations in the world for annual rate of reduction of stillbirths.
• A stillbirth is defined as a fetal death past 20 weeks gestation - anything before this is considered a miscarriage
• Nearly 2/3 of all stillbirth deaths remain unexplained.
