ABOUT ME
My name is Lisa Mayer, and I HAVE metastatic breast cancer (MBC).
In June of 2016, I went to my primary doctor because I had a cough that wouldn't go away. In August of 2016, I had a mammogram that was completely normal. In September, I saw a lung doctor who put me on steroids until I pointed out hard lymph nodes by my collar bones. He immediately referred me to a surgeon, and on October 20, 2016, my life changed forever.
I received a phone call that I had de novo metastatic breast cancer. I had stage 4 right a way, no chance of a cure and an average life span of 3 years. I did everything right... I got yearly mammograms and did monthly self checks and still got breast cancer. The cancer had spread from my right breast to both lungs, stomach, spine and many lymph nodes. I couldn't stop coughing and I couldn't breath so they started chemo immediately. The chemo treatments were every Friday and lasted for 6 months. My treatments will be for the rest of my life.
For the last 8 years I have been with no evidence of disease. It will be 9 years in October that I have been fighting to live, watching my friends die around me and praying this doesn't happen to my children and relatives.
THIS is why I am fundraising for METAvivor. We need a cure now. We need money for research because 30% of early-stage breast cancers will progress to stage 4.
I have been an advocate for the last 4 years and I tell my story to everyone that will listen. So many people haven't heard of MBC or stage 4 breast cancer; I was one of those people almost 9 years ago. Please help me raise money to help educate and find a cure for metastatic breast cancer. WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?
The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.
#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
