WHAT IS #LIGHTUPMBC?
The #LightUpMBC campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research to benefit METAvivor. Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.
#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer. ABOUT METASTATIC BREAST CANCER
Metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4 or advanced stage cancer, is the spread of breast cancer to other parts of the body -- most commonly to the bones, liver, lungs, and brain. Approximately 30% of earlier stage breast cancer patients will metastasize to Stage 4. Average life expectancy is approximately 3 years. Over 670,000 people die each year globally of metastatic breast cancer. In the U.S. alone, over 43,000 women and men die of MBC every year; that's equivalent to 117 deaths every single day! Scientists need more funding for critical MBC research that can save lives.
WHY GREEN, TEAL AND PINK?
The pink ribbon is well-known for representing the fight against breast cancer, but most MBC patients feel that pink does not encapsulate their experience. To highlight the uniqueness of the disease, METAvivor designed a ribbon of green, teal and pink. Green represents the triumph of spring over winter, life over death, and symbolizes renewal, hope, and immortality while teal symbolizes healing and spirituality. The thin pink ribbon overlay signifies the metastatic cancer originated in the breast.
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE #LIGHTUPMBC CAMPAIGN

#LightUpMBC was created in honor and loving memory of Jessica Moore (pictured). Jessica was loved by all who knew her and always found something to be grateful for. She embodied the word 'care' and dedicated her life as a nurse to helping others. At the age of 32, she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and passed away from the disease less than 4 years later. Jessica was a strong advocate and wanted to bring attention to the lack of funding the disease receives. We carry on her vision and mission through the #LightUpMBC Campaign.
