Being involved with the Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation is at a time when I am trying to control my blood sugar numbers more than ever.
My diabetes journey started when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 31. When I was admitted to the hospital my blood sugar numbers were way off the charts - well over 600. The meter couldn’t measure as high as my blood sugar level was.
My life has changed for the better since I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I adjusted my diet, became more physically active with exercise, and followed up with blood sugar testing and giving myself insulin shots. Since my pancreas cannot produce enough to keep me regulated throughout the day, I am now on a pump gives me insulin, as needed. Living with diabetes is a lifelong changing event.
When I became a Lions member, I learned Lions were supporting research for a cure for diabetes.
I became a Trustee with Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation because I wanted to spread the word on how diabetes can be prevented and also how people can improve their health while living with diabetes.
I’ve also learned about diabetes research at the University of Minnesota. It amazes me how close we are to a cure. Research has led to the use of pig islets and artificial pancreases. Treatment options continue to expand.
My service as a Lions member has introduced me to many individuals who have been either recently diagnosed or have lived with diabetes for years. We are helping to spread the word about research updates, devices that can test blood sugars every 5 minutes, 24-hours a day and prompting a pump to give insulin as needed. It has taken many years to develop the technology that is now saving and improving countless lives. Also amazing, are service dogs trained to detect low blood sugars.
Globally, Lions International and Lions members across the world are serving to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the health of people living with diabetes. In Minnesota, Lions partnerships with local stores and organizations have helped many people in local communities.
