Adult learners come to Literacy NJ for free ESL, GED, U.S. Citizenship and Basic Literacy classes because literacy will help them obtain a better job, a high school diploma, citizenship, or the confidence to speak to a doctor, teacher or neighbor, or read aloud to a child.
As a board member of Literacy NJ -- as well as a high school English language arts teacher -- I'm reminded daily of the critical need in our society to expand opportunities for such adult learners.
It is my fervent hope to support and expand adult literacy progams around the Garden State and, simultaneously, fill tutor-availability gaps in and around my home base in Ocean County.
Who specifically benefits from such programs? When asked that question, I think of LiteracyNJ student Ana, who recently received her GED. As she said in a speech to her classmates, “This is a new beginning for us. It will open the door to better opportunity and personal growth, and I see a bright future for you and for me. Most importantly, it proves that it is never too late to believe in yourself again!”
We need your help to continue meeting the needs of our 1,800+ students and to continue training and supporting more than 400 tutors. Thousands of personal and professional goals are met by our students each year. Help us meet our goal – in three short days – and continue empowering our adult learners.
Here’s how you can help:
Donate – Every gift, big or small, brings us closer to our fundraising goal and directly supports students in our communities.
Spread the Word – Share our page with friends and family and on social media. The more people who know, the more impact we can make!
Let's do this together!
