Let's Not Be Still

My name is Sandy Boone. In the baby loss community, I’m considered a “loss Nana”.

When my 1st and only grandson Liam Michael Paulette was stillborn at full term on Wednesday, November 14, 2018….time stood still as well. From the moment in the hospital that I just knew something had gone horribly wrong with his delivery, to watching Liam’s dad walking through the waiting room towards us, to seeing my daughter’s tear streaked face as she held her son….time stood still. There was no going back…..nor forward.

I have described what it feels like when experiencing infant loss as suddenly finding yourself in a strange foreign land. A place where you don’t know the language, culture, or even how to get from one place to another. Over time, while you may become familiar with this scary & sad place…you know you can never really leave it behind.

My daughter is the one who told me about Star Legacy Foundation. She became involved with them to help spread their message to her community and do what she could to advocate for other families who had lost a child through miscarriage, still birth, and neo natal death. I signed up to volunteer and learned a lot about the subject of child loss. I have heard and read countless stories from other loss families. And nearly 2 years later, all I can say with any certainty is that we are not alone.

I have many years of experience in event planning and catering and offered to fill that role within the Virginia Chapter of Star Legacy. Our “functions” aren’t weddings, dinner parties, graduation parties. Rather, when we come together to plan a remembrance event, virtual walk, anniversary picnic….it’s to be with others who walk the same path we do…who have a piece of their heart missing…who want their child (grandchild) to be remembered. To be with others who remind us, we are not alone.
