We were 32 weeks along with our pregnancy when I felt something wasn’t quite right as I noticed our active baby boy wasn’t moving as much as usual and went to the ER late at night to check on his heartbeat, which turned out to be fatally low. Within an hour they were rushing us into the delivery room with little explanation, putting me under and performing an emergency c section. Our son was delivered on 10/3/15 but unfortunately did not breath after delivery and when I awoke from the anesthesia my husband had arrived and was alone, devastated, waiting by my side as the doctor informed me that our baby had died. This tragic loss was such a shock to us and completely destroyed our world as we never knew that a loss at this stage with no apparent cause was possible. Our family continues to mourn the loss of our beloved second son, Owen Nathaniel Vick, and feel his void every day. He should be four this year, but we don’t get to see the sweet and fun little boy he surely would’ve been. Losing a baby means losing a child, a young man (or woman), a lifetime together. We are raising funds for Star Legacy to advocate for others to receive better medical care and educate mothers so they can be aware of any potential issues with their pregnancy and hopefully be able to avoid a loss themselves. In this age of medical technology and healthcare advances, there’s no reason for so many horrific, often preventable, losses.
