In Memoriam

Exactly one year ago, my father passed away. He was my hero, my mentor, and the reason for my lifelong love of music. When I was growing up, my dad sang in a barbershop chorus. I remember going to his concerts as a child and being mesmerized by the harmonies. When I started singing myself, he became my biggest fan. He supported my interest in music and came to all of my choir concerts. Many years later, after my mom passed, my dad was living in Florida and looking for something to fill the time. He found the Space Coast Chorus and rediscovered his love for barbershop singing. The camaraderie from his fellow barbershop singers was precious to him, and gave him purpose and pleasure in his later years. He was given several awards by the chorus thanks to his passionate involvement. After he had his aneurysm, and he could no longer sing, it broke my heart. HIs voice was taken away from him. His fellow singers would ask about him all the time, and when he passed, they came and sang at his funeral. I moved back to New York, and I was thrilled to be accepted into the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. When I sing, I often think of my dad, and how his voice flows through me. I sing because of him. I am proud to be part of the NYCGMC, and I humbly ask that you join me in supporting its mission, in remembrance of my father. Please participate in our fundraiser by contributing in any way that you can. I also ask that my close friends and family donate in lieu of any gifts for my upcoming birthday. Thank you.

NYCGMC Membership Fundraising Drive 2019

Welcome to the NYCGMC 2019 Membership Fundraising Drive!

Celebrating 40 years during the 2019-2020 season, New York City Gay Men’s Chorus is an internationally renowned performing arts institution in New York City and a pioneering voice for the LGBTQ+ community. Through the power of song, NYCGMC challenges people’s perceptions of the LGBTQ+ community, combats fear and hatred, encourages compassion and human connection, and thrills audiences with inspiring performances. At a moment when LGBTQ+ civil rights are significantly under threat, NYCGMC champions social justice and unconditional acceptance.

Founded in 1979, NYCGMC provided a community when LGBTQ+ people faced daunting challenges and devastating loss.  Looking back, the Chorus’ 40th Anniversary builds upon a legacy of musical excellence that advocates for equality and love, celebrates monumentally historic victories, and fiercely safeguards the memories of our entire community. In this milestone season, NYCGMC reflects on an extraordinary past and forges an innovative and exciting path for the future, inviting  New York City and the entire world to join in the celebration.

NYCGMC is comprised of more than 275 talented singers of various ages, backgrounds, and experiences, across a spectrum of gender identity and sexual orientation. We present 3 mainstage shows and over 40 outreach activities across all five boroughs and beyond annually. Last year’s outreach performances included appearances at LGBTQ teen homeless shelters, at SAGE for LGBTQ elders, and at corporate and public pride celebrations.  In 2018-19, NYCGMC performed at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium; at gala fundraisers for the Swish Ally Fund and the Ackerman Institute; and at the Brooklyn Museum and the Global Citizen concert in Central Park, among many others.  Television appearances including Good Morning AmericaThe Tonight Show, and Last Week Tonight have provided a national platform for our mission. Through technical assistance and joint concerts, we support development of LGBTQ choruses in the US and internationally. Our school program reaches over 2,000 NYC public middle-school students, and we are currently expanding the program to new schools, including high schools.

Our 40th anniversary 2019-20 season is underway with rehearsals for our beautiful holiday show, NYCGMC's Annual Holiday Extravaganza (December 13-15, 2019), and plans for Big Gay Sing:  Divas, Divas, Divas in March 2020.  We cap off our season on June 20, 2020 with a triumphant return to David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, Proud!  NYCGMC Celebrates 40 Years.  For more information about us, and to purchase tickets to our upcoming concert season, please visit www.nycgmc.org.
