When I moved to Minneapolis shortly after graduating from college, I was looking for a way to get involved in my new community—to meet people, give back, and do something meaningful with my time. That search led me to Minds Matter, a program that supports high-achieving, low-income, and under-resourced students as they prepare for and apply to college.

The mission immediately resonated with me. I was fortunate enough to grow up knowing that college was always in my future—it was never a question of if, only where. Minds Matter exists for students who don’t have that same certainty, despite having the talent, drive, and ambition to succeed.

When I joined Minds Matter, I became a mentor to Adam, a first-generation Somali student with a dream of becoming a doctor so he could give back to his community. For two years, Adam and I spent nearly every Saturday during the school year together—researching colleges, writing essays, applying for scholarships, and studying for the SAT.

What struck me most was how much effort Adam had to put in just to reach a starting point I had completely taken for granted. While I spent my Saturdays skiing during high school, Adam was showing up week after week for four hours of additional classes, fully committed to building a future he believed in.

Adam’s hard work paid off. He was accepted to the University of Minnesota, and today he’s on his path toward becoming a doctor.

Fast forward a handful of years and a couple of cities, and I’m incredibly excited to be involved once again—this time as a member of the Associate Board for Minds Matter Colorado. While the location has changed, the mission remains the same: unlocking opportunity for students who deserve it but may not otherwise have access.

Minds Matter had a profound impact on me, and I’ve seen firsthand how transformative it can be for students like Adam.
