Trauma dogs are used directly after a traumatic event to reduce stress and anxiety, by demonstrating affection while exercising restraint. This ability to engage with any person is vital to producing friendships in fast, dynamic situations (such as mental health calls) or to instill a solid, consistent figure in the community. They also provide comfort to officers, who often handle dangerous and traumatic situations.

Community policing is essential for any police department and having a dog brings a level of intimacy with officers that might not be present all of the time. Additionally, the community members can be positively affected for a lifetime from the impacts of a trauma dog during crisis situations.

MUPD hopes that the community can be involved in the dogs life as much as the dog will be involved in the community.

How will donations be used?

All donations will be used solely for the dog and his care. Your donations will assist in assuring the dog is healthy, well groomed, and living his best life while working on campus with our students. This program will allow the puppy to be on campus for years as a comfort and trauma dog with our students.

How will Brooks be involved with students on campus?

Our students are already buzzing about him. Ivan is training the puppy to not only be available with him during vehicle and foot patrols, but also with limited bicycle patrols. Expect to see Ivan and Brooks in the SMC, Quad, spring athletic games and our events like Cornhole with the Cops in the quad!
