Funds for Pets is a volunteer-run, registered, not-for-profit rescue organization dedicated to helping homeless animals in need.
Our mission is to assist stray animals by providing temporary housing through our foster program, until a permanent, loving home can be found.
A while back, we got asked to foster a little Chihuahua named Cami. We were warned that she came from a neglectful situation and was extremely fearful of people, but we had fostered other abused dogs before and confidently thought we could take on Cami.
For the first several months, Cami didn’t even want to be in the same room with us. It took two more months for us to make eye contact without Cami panicking, then even longer for us to be able to talk to her directly. Slowly, very, very slowly, we began to practice petting her and picking her up.
To be clear, she hated every second we pushed her out of her comfort zone and it often felt like we weren’t making any progress. But, because she was in a home rather than a kennel or shelter, she started to get used to a normal routine. She started to choose to be in the same room as us, she showed us little dances when it was dinner time, and she passed beside us on the stairs. It all sounds like miniscule actions, that would come naturally to any other dog, but with Cami these were ridiculous milestones to be celebrated.
Cami still has a long way to go but it is amazing to watch her partake in activities she's come to love, such as going for walks and running at the off-leash dog park. It will take a very special family to adopt her, but being in rescue has taken Cami from a hopelessly scared dog to one who shows excitement, and occasional bursts of a surprisingly quirky personality. She's not going to lick our faces in gratitude, but we know that rescue has given her a second chance to be the happy dog she deserves to be.
