June 4th finds me at it again—100 holes in a single day, which at my age is either admirable or questionable judgment… probably a bit of both. It’ll be my 18th go at this Golf Marathon, and I’ve learned two things over the years: the shoulders get a little creakier, and the cause somehow means even more.

This year I’m playing in memory of Barbara Cook, who left us six years ago after a brave fight with pancreatic cancer. In those early Golf Marathon days at Woods Hole, Barbara would follow me on the course with her sweet daughters, Allison and Caroline, always with their warm smiles and words of encouragement. Barbara had a rare way about her—deeply devoted to her family, endlessly kind to friends and strangers alike, and usually the first one rolling up her sleeves when someone needed a hand. The world could use a few more Barbaras, no doubt about it.

Thanks to your kindness over the years, this annual pastime of mine has somehow raised over $260,000 for Golf Fights Cancer. That still stuns me—and it’s only possible because of you.
