Cancer by the Numbers… and the Hope Behind Them

1 phone call from my doctor — on Christmas Eve — telling me I had cancer.

2 surgeries, including an unexpected return to the OR.

17 radiation treatments.

5 years of oral chemotherapy and countless follow‑up visits.

12 Golf Marathons — this year marks my 12th, totaling 1,200 holes of golf.

54 — my age when I played my first 100 holes.

66 — my age for this year’s Marathon… and yes, it’s getting harder, but I’m still swinging.

Over $120,000 raised thanks to the generosity of my incredible supporters.

And now, the best number of all: 5 years. I officially hit the five‑year mark since starting oral chemo — which means I am DONE with treatment. HOORAY. My doctor believes this chapter is behind me. Early detection, a non‑aggressive cancer, and exceptional medical care all played a part in my positive outcome. I am one of the lucky ones.

But even though my cancer is gone, my commitment to helping others continues. On June 4, I’ll once again tee it up for 100 holes at Juniper Hill Golf Course in the Golf Fights Cancer Marathon. And I’m asking all of you — anyone who has been touched by cancer in any way — to join me by offering your support.

I’ve lost loved ones, friends, and colleagues to this disease. I know many who are fighting right now, and many who, like me, have come out on the other side. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It shows up uninvited and turns lives upside down. That’s why we step in. That’s why we help.

This year, I’m proud to support three organizations making a real difference:

• The Joe Andruzzi Fund — providing financial assistance to cancer patients and their families.
• The Boston House — offering no‑cost housing for families of pediatric cancer patients receiving care in Boston.
• Marisa’s Mission — created in memory of Marisa Federico, offering financial support to patients and families facing the burden of cancer.

Boston is a world leader in cancer treatment, but staying here during treatment can be incredibly expensive. The Boston House eases that burden. And when a diagnosis forces patients or caregivers to stop working, the financial strain can be overwhelming — Joe Andruzzi and Marisa’s Mission step in when families need it most.

Your support — big or small — helps these organizations continue their vital work.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for walking with me through my own cancer journey and for standing by me through 12 years of Golf Fights Cancer Marathons. I dream of the day when these marathons are no longer needed. Until then, I’ll keep showing up, swinging hard, and doing everything I can to be a catalyst for giving.
