With support from many churches, we could completely eliminate the extreme medical debt for our Region.

The Research

There is $12 million of qualifying medical debt in Northwest Indiana (Lake County, Porter County, LaPorte County). $7.8 million of that is in Gary alone. This campaign hopes to eliminate all of the qualifying medical debt for Northwest Indiana, beginning with Gary.

The Request

To begin, an invested group of churches has committed over $60,000 of the $120,000. But we will need broad-based help from many churches to eliminate ALL of the debt. What if dozens or hundreds of churches did whatever part they could?

The Result

Paying this debt for those in need is a game-changer – opening the chance for a new life. The medical debt currently keeps them in a desperate situation, blocking them from being able to buy a car or home to help build their livelihood. This opens up opportunities like that.

Those having debt forgiven will receive a letter telling them the churches of Northwest Indiana have come together to pay their debt. The letters arrive about 6-8 weeks after payment so they would learn this news leading up to Easter.

Who is RIP Medical Debt? RIP Medical Debt (RIP) is a national 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to empower donors to forgive the billions of dollars in oppressive medical debt at pennies on the dollar. • Medical debt contributes to more than 60 percent of the bankruptcies in the U.S. Until satisfied, debt lingers on a person’s credit report to negatively impact their ability to buy a home, get a loan or even gain employment. (The American Journal of Medicine)

Whose unpayable medical bills does RIP forgive?

• Individuals who make less than 2 times the federal poverty level
• Individuals with financial hardship - 5% or more of their annual income goes to out-of-pocket medical expenses
• Individuals who are insolvent (debts greater to their assets)
