I am honored to be running the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon in support of Soccer Without Borders (SWB)—a nonprofit that fosters belonging and builds confidence in underserved and newcomer/refugee youth through soccer, education, and community. I’ve had the privilege of being a part of SWB for five+ years in a variety of roles and have grown to care deeply about the organization and the incredible young people that it serves.

SWB partners with schools and community organizations to create free, safe soccer programs in neighborhoods that lack access to structured sports. Off the field, SWB provides comprehensive academic and personal support through tutoring, mentorship and enrichment opportunities that help participants succeed in school and in life. SWB welcomes youth of all backgrounds and is designed to empower those who often face barriers to joining traditional programs. SWB participants come from 122 countries and speak 112 different languages! By integrating sport with education and community, SWB helps young people build confidence, cultivate leadership skills, and foster a strong sense of belonging.

I am so grateful to have worked closely with SWB for several years as a tutor, soccer coach, and ESOL teacher. In college, I intentionally scheduled classes around SWB’s programming to spend time with and support participants as much as I could. Seeing them adjust to life in the United States—growing socially, emotionally, and intellectually while simultaneously gaining confidence and a sense of belonging has been nothing short of amazing. Building close relationships with these kids has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the culture and strength within our global community. SWB kids are truly the best! 

I’m working to raise $6,000, which will go directly toward SWB programming—supporting soccer training and equipment distribution, academic support, and community-building activities that will help these incredible kids thrive.

The global displacement crisis has surpassed a projected 117.3 million people worldwide. It continues to be one of the most urgent social issues of the 21st century. Refugee and asylum-seeking youth are fleeing some of the world's most challenging and protracted conflicts, seeking safety, stability, and opportunities to build new homes. Every young person deserves the chance to belong, learn, and thrive—especially those navigating a new country, language, and culture.
