More than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more have been injured. In Gaza specifically, a ‘total blockade’ is in place, completely cutting off the 2 million civilians from access to food, electricity, and fuel. The number of internally displaced people is estimated at about 1 million.

Food stocks in shops are “nearly exhausted”; water production capacity is currently at “five percent of normal levels,” forcing people to consume saline water and risking water-borne diseases; and health facilities are expected to run out of the limited amounts of fuel they’ve secured locally in the next day or so.

In addition, the total number of housing units destroyed or damaged accounts for at least 42% of all housing units in the Gaza Strip. Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed. While 20 aid trucks were able to cross in from Egypt on October 21, humanitarian groups say it’s “a drop in the ocean,” as civilians receive 100 trucks worth of aid per day under regular circumstances.

IRUSA partners have successfully distributed vital medical supplies to hospitals in Gaza, as well as hygiene kits to families sheltering in schools. Other interventions our partners are working on include distribution of food packages to 400 families in Gaza; mobile medical teams providing access to urgent health services to injured and/or sick internally displaced persons in Gaza shelters; and ongoing distribution of hygiene kits and procurement of emergency medical supplies to be delivered once a path for humanitarian aid is established.

Gaza: Over One Year Later

One year later, over 43,000 people have been killed and thousands more have been injured or deemed missing, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. A recent study in The Lancet, a peer-reviewed general medical journal, has found the true death toll could reach more than 186,000 people. To add, a ‘total blockade’ has been put in place, cutting off 2 million civilians from access to food, electricity, and fuel.

United Nations officials are warning of an impending famineabout 55% of all infrastructure has been destroyed; and more than 90% of the population has been displaced.

The attack on the health system has been particularly devastating. Less than half of Gaza’s hospitals are partially functional, facing challenges with the shortage of medical staff and lack of essential medical supplies. Polio, a virus that can cause irreversible paralysis in a matter of hours, has also recently reemerged. High malnutrition rates and stress levels make children more vulnerable to infection, and the Gaza Health Ministry has already confirmed an alarming case of polio in a 10-month-old.

While issues related to the delivery of humanitarian aid persist, IRUSA partners are continuing to work on the following interventions:

  • Distribution of food parcels sourced by local farmers in Gaza to displaced families
  • Provision of hygiene kits to people in shelters
  • Provision of vital medical supplies to three hospitals including Hayfa Hospital, Al-Awda Hospital, and Al-Ahli Arab Hospital
  • Access to mobile clinics for 23,400 people in shelters
  • Immediate trauma response for 4,000-5,000 people
  • Winter aid including essential non-food items such as blankets, mattresses, and winter clothing
