“Giving Tuesday: A Personal Story of Hope and Transformation” Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity, a day to give back and support causes that change lives. For me, this day holds deep personal significance, as it reminds me of the journey my family has taken and the life-changing role Parc Center for Disabilities has played in that story. My personal connection began long ago when my sister Leslie was born. She entered the world with a cleft palate and a staph infection that caused water on her brain, leading to brain damage. At that time—65 years ago—there were virtually no services or support for children born with developmental disabilities. Doctors advised my parents to institutionalize her, and by the time Leslie turned 10, my mother, overwhelmed with caring for her and four younger children, had no choice but to place her in Sunland, a state institution in Fort Myers. I vividly remember those weekend visits to Sunland. Seeing my sister there and watching my mother cry every time we had to leave her left an indelible mark on me. For 10 years, my family fought tirelessly for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities, joining a movement that ultimately helped close state institutions like Sunland. Because of this advocacy and determination, Leslie’s life was forever changed. At the age of 21, she was able to move to Parc Center for Disabilities, where she has lived ever since. Parc not only saved her life but gave her the opportunity to thrive. Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact this organization has on individuals with developmental disabilities, empowering them to live their best lives through innovative programs, compassionate care, and unwavering support. This is why Giving Tuesday is so important to me. It’s a chance to invest in life-changing organizations like Parc Center for Disabilities, which provide hope and opportunities for children, adults, and families in our community.
