The Physics Department is fundraising toward a goal of $5,700 for updated equipment that will provide hands-on experiences which are essential for students’ future success.

Classroom Quantum Levitation Maglev Kit

The Department is in need of $3,500 for a Classroom Maglev Kit to be used for class demonstrations and outreach programs.

This equipment will serve demonstration purposes for upper-level courses, and in visits to area schools.  It would also allow students to examine levitation as part of a senior research project. Current Maglev track in the department lacks enough strong magnetic to properly show the effect.

The Michelson Interferometer

The Department is in need of $2,200 for the Michelson Interferometer to permit students to investigate two-beam interference phenomena.

Without the linear translation stage and drives, our current Michelson experiment lacks the necessary components to obtain precision measurements for the interference pattern and observation of the sodium doublet.

This equipment will be mainly used for in class demonstrations and by our Physics Demonstration Team for outreach programs.  The Demo Team is designed to provide interesting and educational physics demonstrations at nearby middle and high schools to promote an interest in science and recruit competitive students to Millersville University. It will also be used during recruitment events at the University, such as Brossmann Science Lectureship and Women in Science.

The Michelson Interferometer permits student to investigate two-beam interference phenomena. Experiments in our intermediate and advanced lab courses rely upon the precision movement of mirrors to measure wavelengths of various light sources.  With the addition of an actuated linear translation stage, our current Michelson experiment gains the capability to obtain precision measurements for the interference pattern while observing the well-known phenomena of the sodium doublet. With the purchase of a dedicated sodium lamp for the Michelson setup, students will benefit by having a fully complete experimental setup for ongoing study.
