How fitting that the Baltimore Promise Walk is happening on the weekend of Alyssa's first birthday. On May 13, 2019 at exactly 34 weeks pregnant I presented to the ER with chest pains. It turns out I was in hypertensive crisis with blood pressure over 200/100 and also showing signs of impaired kidney function. Within 2 hours my daughter was delivered by emergency cesarean. It would be another 36 hours until I was able to hold her for the first time and another 10 days until she could come home from the NICU. I am immensely thankful for the Preeclampsia Foundation, whose information empowered me to be proactive in my prenatal care and to receive lung boosting steroid injections just 4 days prior to Alyssa's birth. The Preeclampsia Foundation also provided a wealth of information to help me understand afterwards everything my body went through and the health problems which I may be susceptible to in the future as a result of this disease.
