On September 1, we said both hello and goodbye to our daughter, Ruby. After noticing no fetal movement the day before, we learned that our straightforward, uncomplicated pregnancy had ended at 32 weeks due to a cord accident.

Over the past year, we've discovered what it means to parent a baby who lives in our hearts rather than our arms. We’ve found ways to keep Ruby’s memory alive in our everyday lives—from donating breast milk to help other babies in need, to wearing ruby jewelry and tattoos that carry her name. Her big brother Henry rings a windchime to hear her “sing,” and looks for the brightest star in the sky so he can wink back at his sister. We keep her photo on our dresser, visit “Ruby Beach” where her ashes rest, and always include her when asked how many children we have.

These are just some of the ways we ensure Ruby remains part of our family. Though we continue to grieve the daughter we never got to raise, we carry her love with us every day.

This year, we’re participating in the Remember Us Still Walk to raise funds for the Star Legacy Foundation, an organization dedicated to preventing pregnancy and infant loss, advancing research, and supporting families like ours.
