Dawn's CRPS Journey

We would like to take this time to give some background of Dawn Pahides who was diagnosed with this condition. On July 25, 2011 Dawn was walking down a flight of stairs. She dislocated her left ankle, due to a separate joint condition. She fixed her ankle and kept walking. Throughout the day, her whole foot went numb, and swelled up so bad she couldn't move it. Later that night, she went to Trinity West hospital and got X-Rays which showed no broken bones. Trinity West informed her that she would need to get a MRI as soon as possible. That night is when the pain started for Dawn. It felt like her foot was on fire. It took less than a week to get the MRI and found out from her orthopedic doctor that she partially tore her Achilles tendon. They informed her that if it tore any more she would need surgery and put her in a boot. She was instructed to stay off of her foot and to take physical therapy. No one could understand why the pain was so severe, not knowing that these were the beginning signs of CRPS. The temperature and color changes started 4 months later. That was when her orthopedic doctor realized what was wrong with her foot. He diagnosed her with CRPS and sent her to a pain management doctor. Which lead to her having multiple nerve blocks and tried many types of pain pills, all with no avail. By this time it felt like there was no hope, no chance of ever walking again or being in less pain. That is when she was sent to Cleveland Clinic for more pain management. After another failed nerve block we started talking about the next steps in treatment. Everyone agreed on a spinal cord stimulator trial. On February 2, 2015, Dawn had the permanent stimulator put in. This has been a life changer; her pain is cut in half. Dawn still has a long road ahead of her in the sense of ever walking normally again; however, she is constantly struggling and fighting never giving up to the pain. It is through things like this in spreading awareness that keeps Dawn going. Knowing she has the potential to help other people and save them the excruciating pain that she faces on a daily basis. That is why we are holding this fundraiser and trying to get the word out. Any chance to catch this condition sooner than she was able to is a blessing.
