My Story

I fractured my left ankle in a softball injury. After it was supposed to have been healed, I was still experiencing pain symptoms. My Dr. kept brushing me off and telling me to come back in a month if I was still in pain. Month after month I kept returning to the Dr. trying to get answers to why I was still experiencing pain in my ankle. During this time my cousin, Ken, had been fighting one of the worst cases of RSD/CRPS that any Dr. had ever seen. When I described to my aunt the pain I was experiencing, she told me it sounded the same as what my cousin went through when his symptoms first started. I went back to the Dr. and explained about my cousin and demanded an MRI, after ruling out the orthopedic specialist, I was finally referred to a pain specialist and was diagnosed with CRPS. I began treatments of nerve blocks and many different types of medications. None of those treatments provided any long-term relief for me. In December of 2016 I got a spinal cord stimulator implanted. The spinal cord stimulator has given me the most effective pain relief so far but it does not eliminate, or by any means, cure the pain. My cousin’s symptoms spread so severely that almost every part of this body was affected by this illness. After fighting with Drs, insurance companies, and workers comp. for years, on Feb 8th 2015 Ken Gardner lost his fight to RSD/CRPS. It was because of my cousin that I was able to get my diagnosis early and begin treatment. We are doing this walk in memory of my cousin and to help raise awareness so that others like me are able to get early treatment and hopefully one day cured.
