December 23rd of 2022 forever changed my life. I heard the words no one ever wants to hear. You have lung cancer.  I was hospitalized a few days later and stayed a week with a chest tube connected to my left side. Many tests and scans later, I learned that I have stage 4 non-small cell adenocarcinoma which had spread to my brain, adrenal gland, liver, bones, and pleural space.  A few weeks later I learned I had a mutation, specifically the ALK mutation, which has many good treatment options. Finally....a bright light amongst this dark news. I started taking Alecensa on 1/27/23 and have responded very well to treatment!  
 

I have had a crash course on lung cancer and learned so much. Here is a key takeaway- Anybody with lungs can get lung cancer. You don't have to smoke or be exposed to toxic chemicals to be at risk. I am not a smoker and am/was a very healthy person who worked out 4-5 times a week, ate well, and completed all of my preventive care.  None of this matters when you have a mutation.
