Why I'm Fundraising ...
When deciding which fraternities to rush, one of the biggest factors that drew me to Pike was Shave and Buzz. This organization was founded on the strength of brotherhood after one of its members, Bobby Menges, was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout his treatment, Bobby became deeply concerned about how chemotherapy would impact his future fertility. Unfortunately, fertility preservation treatments are extremely expensive and are often not covered by insurance until fertility has already been lost. As a result, Bobby’s ability to have children in the future was significantly affected.
When given the opportunity to raise money for a cause, Bobby chose to support fertility preservation for others facing similar challenges. Since its founding, Shave and Buzz has partnered with the I’m Not Done Yet Foundation to help fund these treatments, ultimately enabling more than 70 families to be formed.
Although I am just one member of the larger group of Pikes supporting this mission, I believe this is the most meaningful event our chapter hosts each year. I hope that, even through a small donation, you will consider supporting this incredible cause and helping make a lasting impact.

Why Fertility Preservation for adolescent and young adult cancer patients?
When adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients who have completed treatment are asked their biggest concerns, the most common is: "Will I be able to have children?" It’s not the risk for cancer recurrence or disability and disfigurement - the desire to build a family is their highest priority. In addition to the toxicity of cancer treatments themselves, chronic health conditions can occur in the aftermath of any cancer treatment protocol, and infertility is among the most common long-term complication.
So, it’s unfortunate that in the confusion and deluge of information during a new cancer diagnosis, including staging, testing, treatment and prognosis, the topic of fertility preservation can be set aside or forgotten. AYA cancer patients report a lack of adequate information to make informed fertility decisions. Meeting the unique fertility goals of every patient requires appropriate fertility counseling, as well as logistical and financial access to fertility care.
One of I’m Not Done Yet's mission is to provide the resources for AYA cancer patients to preserve their fertility.
Your support of the Shave & Buzz will help ensure that these young patients have the HOPE that despite having cancer, they can one day have a family of their own.
