Cruisin with Sophia Claire

Sophia is a sweet, smart and happy two year old. She makes this world a brighter place and her smile is contagious. She loves being around people, going outside and playing with her toys. Sophia has Spina Bifida and though it plays a daily role in our lives; in most aspects she is like any other two year old. When we received her diagnosis at our 20 week anatomy scan we really did not understand what it all meant. Doctors threw around a wide range of issues she might have and it was devastating. SBAK supported us in this time and in the months that followed. SBAK and it’s members were like little angels holding our hand in a time of so much uncertainty and fear and for SBAK we will be forever grateful! Sophia’s journey is an inspiring and extraordinary one. She has a flare for the dramatic you could say! At 24 weeks gestation she had fetal surgery to repair the malformation of her spinal cord. Though there is no complete cure for Spina Bifida, we feel the decision to have this surgery has made a positive difference for her life and her diagnosis. Following this, she decided to make her debut into this world at 30 weeks at a whopping 3 lbs. 4 oz.! Meeting her for the first time took our breath away. She was this fragile little thing who in spite of it all wanted to hold my hand with her tiny fingers while sucking on a pacifier that covered her small face! Sophia teaches us daily about strength, overcoming challenges and being resilient as she works through tough physical therapy sessions each week. She has had more medical procedures than many have in a lifetime from routine MRI scans, ultra sounds and clinic visits, but despite all this her smile rarely fades. Sophia has Spina Bifida but Spina Bifida does not define Sophia. She is an amazing beautiful sole who is going to do amazing things in her life. SBAK has helped us beyond measure in our journey and so many other families and children with Spina Bifida. Please consider making a donation in Sophia’s name to this amazing organization. All proceeds go to the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky and it’s mission to build a better and brighter future for all those impacted by Spina Bifida.
