As a nurse for many years, I have personally cared for numerous children & adults who have been born with Spina Bifida. It is the most common spinal abnormality present at birth & affects about 1/1500 babies born in the US each year. SB occurs when the neural tube, which becomes the spine bones, and the spinal cord do not fuse properly in a developing fetus. There are different types but many will require surgical intervention at birth & possibly again, even multiple times, throughout the lifespan. There has been no single cause nor any full-proof way to prevent SB from occurring. My goal, as a member of the Board of Directors of SBAK, is to promote awareness & to help raise funds for those affected by this anomaly. October is Spina Bifida awareness month & I will be participating in the Louisville area Walk-n-Roll on Sat, Oct 1, 2016 at Iriquois Park. Please consider donating to this cause, as any amount helps!
