Our family is blessed to be a part of such a great cause and non-profit organization as the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky! (also known as SBAK for short) I found out at just 20 weeks pregnant with confirmation from an MRI performed at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY that my son, Damon, had spina bifida. What exactly is spina bifida you may wonder? Spina bifida literally means split spine! It occurs in the womb within the first 4 weeks of conception when the spinal column doesnt close all of the way. Just a couple of days after Damon was born the executive director, at the time, of the Spina Bifida Association of KY (whom is still actively involved and is a parent of an awesome son with spina bifida) came to the hospital and sat with us, supported us, & gave all kinds of informative information about how amazing of a child she knew Damon would be and how bright his future would be, what resources I could use, and shared with me a community of folks just like myself and Damon that I could lean on! Since then, I've joined social media groups directed to spina bifida to keep in touch and informed, attended a Spina Bifida Association of KY conference where medical specialists did Q&A sessions, sent us to The Center for Courageouos Kids (an amazing kids camp), & Damon has even received a ZipZac wheelchair with the assistance of SBAK! I dont know what I'd do without them!
