Why Give?

Thousand Waves is a special place.  We are a community of people that trains Seido Karate - we think our training keeps our bodies and minds strong, and that it builds our capacity to be caring and compassionate individuals.  

• Because we want everyone to be able to experience our programs regardless of their ability to afford our fees, we have a robust scholarship program for children and adults - we distrubuted over $30,000 in assistance last year, making our community a much richer place all the while. Members of our community express their gratitude for the program in this great video by member Mark Hubert.
• We also take our Violence Prevention program all over the city, out into schools and community groups in a spirit of putting compassion into action.  Our empowerment based self-defense programs help create a more peaceful Chicago.
• Our Adapted Seido Karate program allows kids with spinal and other physical and cognitive impairments to train karate for free.  In partnership with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, we've been running this program for over a decade.
