WELCOME TO THE MANITOBA SCHOOL DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE

The Never Alone Cancer Foundation is proud to partner with the Manitoba Paddling Association to host the 2024 Manitoba School Dragon Boat Challenge!

The 2024 Manitoba School Dragon Boat Challenge is taking place on Saturday, June 1st.

This event is a FUNdraiser for the Never Alone Cancer Foundation, a Winnipeg based not-for-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by cancer in our community.  Many people do not realize the financial hardships that accompany a cancer diagnosis.  Without benefits, a cancer diagnosis leaves many unable to work or even care for their children because they are too ill.  No one should ever have to make the decision between groceries or the cost of gas and parking to get to their treatments.

We need paddlers and teams to raise funds to help those in our community who are struggling financially, mentally, and emotionally because of their cancer diagnosis.  We are hoping that Manitoba School kids and their families will help us help cancer patients and their families by raising a minimum of $100 per paddler.

If helping cancer patients in our community isn’t incentive enough to gather pledges, then please read on:

  1. There is a special recognition race for the Top Eight Fundraising teams, and the fastest three teams each receive a prize!
  2. There are gift certificates from Salisbury House for each of the Top Three Individual Fundraisers!

This event will feature junior and senior high school students from all across the province competing for the title of Dragon Boat Champs. Registration includes two, one-hour practices, along with all the equipment and training necessary to compete. Practices will be held at the MB Canoe & Kayak Centre at 80 Churchill Dr. (subject to change due to water levels).

Teams are made up of between 16 and 24 students and teachers (maximum 1 to 2 teacher per boat) representing their school. All boats must have a minimum of 8 female paddlers to be eligible. A dragon boat holds 22 people and teams can have 2 alternates. All participants will be introduced to the sport of canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle board. Practices are held throughout the month of May (days, evenings, or weekends). All practices and events comply with the safety guidelines outlined in the Winnipeg School Divisions Field Trips & Excursions policies manual (Water/ Swimming Activities).
