YAC Attack Virtual Food Drive

a youth powered food drive to support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest, NC in honor of the Think Orange campaign.

Thank you!

Thank you to the City of Winston-Salem, NC - Government Youth Advisory Council and all who supported their wonderfully successful, youth-led Virtual Food Drive! Thanks to Second Harvest’s Circle of Champion for Kids, the YAC’s donation of over $6,500 will be matched $1 for $1 to help ensure that children and their families have the nutrition they need through the months school is out for summer.

Thank you for #FeedingCommunity with us!

Mission

The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council's mission in this virtual food drive is to raise awareness about food insecurity in our community, as well as funds to directly support Second Harvest Food Bank.

The Inspiration

The Winston-Salem YAC recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused economic impacts (like increased unemployment) and has likely exacerbated youth hunger rates in our community. YAC is hosting this food drive for its 2020-2021 annual project to combat teen hunger, expanding on past hunger focused projects. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are taking this endeavor fully online!

In Forsyth County alone, 21.7 percent of youth are food insecure. Additionally, Winston-Salem ranks seventh on a national list of metropolitan statistical areas with the highest rate of food hardship (according to the Food Research and Action Center). YAC recognizes that the health and productivity of our peers directly correlates with access to nutritious food.

The food drive will take place from April 12 to May 14, 2021. The food drive will encourage people to donate small monetary donations of $1, $5, $10, $20 or more. After donating online, benefactors will be prompted with a thank you message and virtual post that they can put on their personal social media pages, sharing that they donated!

The rise of social media platforms has enabled community engagement programs that were never before possible. Troubled by the rise in rates of youth food insecurity, YAC feels that we have the responsibility to address this issue that is personally felt by many in our community.

The Power of the Ones!

Just one dollar. That’s all it takes! Get this: if each student in the WS/FCS System donates just $1, we can reach (and exceed) our monetary goal of raising $5,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank. This will directly support them in their battle against food insecurity. Just a small donation will go a long way in putting food on the table for a family in need. Imagine what we could achieve if YOU donate just $1 . . .

Picture This

  • A small donation is made through our food drive website.
  • Over time, those small donations accumulate to a large amount.
  • YAC provides Second Harvest Food Bank with these donations.
  • With more resources at their disposal, Second Harvest Food Bank is able to serve more organizations and people.
  • A family in need is able to sit down and have food on their table.
  • All of this thanks to just a small donation!
