About Our Event

Making Strides for Special Kids is a 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1 Mile Sprint to raise funds for the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL), a cooperative educational system working with school districts throughout the county to serve students facing physical, emotional, and other learning challenges. The funding SEDOL Foundation hopes to raise through the 10th annual Making Strides for Special Kids event is used to directly enrich the educational, vocational, and social opportunities for children with disabilities in Lake County.

Like many other races have done this year, for the health and safety of everyone involved we will be moving to a virtual format. This was not an easy decision, in particular because this event has historically been designed to feature a capable/handicapable event where capable runners and walkers partner with special needs runners/walkers/wheelchair participants to experience an actual ‘race’. For many of SEDOL’s most special kids, this event was one of the few opportunities for such an experience and our families have looked forward to it throughout the year. However, nothing is more important to us than the safety of SEDOL students, their families, and our staff, and we are excited that a virtual format will allow all of our participants the flexibility to complete their race on their own terms and time and from anywhere in the world.

This unprecedented global pandemic has affected much more than this event as our students and their families are facing significant challenges this year. Reduced access to school facilities for educational services, specialized learning equipment, and even food have created unmet needs for many students that are nothing short of unimaginable. The needs of SEDOL families in the upcoming year will be greater than they’ve ever been and we need your help more than we ever have.

Please join us for this wonderful event. You can join on your own, or even better, start a team and recruit your friends. Your power to make a difference in the lives of our special needs children is unmatched. As a fundraiser and/or team leader you can even designate where your money goes. For example, you can choose for the funds you raise to go toward adaptive equipment (voice output devices, adaptive trikes, etc.), class projects such as the backpack program for children whose families need food on weekends, camp scholarships, emergency funds for families, or a number of additional specific needs.
