My own experience with a toxic church culture—where silence, minimization, and control were the go-to tools for handling abuse and bullying—is why this work is so deeply personal. When I spoke up, it ultimately cost me my job. I know firsthand the pain and isolation that comes when the very place meant to be a safe haven becomes a source of harm. That experience is why, after seven years of working with GRACE, I know the Christian church needs so much more education and help to better care for survivors, especially during the first disclosure.
